1 Year Blogiversary: Lessons I've Learned & Blogging Tips

For my 1 year blogiversary, I wanted to dig deep and share what I've learned this year. This post is loooong because I wanted to make sure I covered everything. And let's be honest- I'm not a girl of few words. I'm sharing some lessons I've learned this year and 10 blogging tips.

I got Parker to take the pictures below while we were at the beach for Ebie's wedding. I typically try to buy and share affordable clothing, but my 1 year blogiversary called for my favorite splurge-worthy dress

Lessons I've Learned

  1. Being kind is an easy and free way to make others (in addition to yourself) happy! There are people who have said the kindest things to me, and they have no idea just how much their words have meant (I'm looking at you Mrs. Meridy, Mrs. Tracy, and many others). Bloggers don't always get tons of feedback on things we have worked really hard on, so when someone goes out of their way to say something kind, it is like all of our hard work is justified! Kindness is so appreciated, and I want to be a person who lifts others up!
  2. On another note, I read this quote recently, and it really resonated with me. "You can be the ripest, juiciest, peach in the world, but there will always be someone who hates peaches." Not everyone is going to care for me or what I'm doing. And you know what- that is ok. Of course it stings when I get unfollowed by someone I know, but I've learned that I cannot let this bother me. The amount of positivity and kindness I've received outweighs the negativity by about 10 billion peaches.
  3. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone has created the most amazing opportunities I did not know were possible! It is so important to stop caring what others think and just be yourself!
  4. Having fun and trying your hardest is something I have been instructed to do since I could comprehend words. I will never forget my mom and dad saying this to me before every single one of the countless tennis matches I played growing up. And if I was upset when I lost, they would say did you have fun and try your hardest? If you’re having fun and trying your hardest, what more can you ask of yourself?? It is just as prevalent today as it’s been in every stage of my life.
  5. Saying no is ok and necessary at times. I have always been a people pleaser. I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings. However, saying no is something that has to be done sometimes. I’ve learned that it is all about HOW I say no. I am not interested in buying followers, promoting various products I get emailed about, etc. But I am interested in being kind and connecting with other women. If I respond in a kind way, my answer does not hurt the other person's feelings nearly as bad.
  6. Comparing myself to others does nothing positive for me. It’s so easy to look at some other girls and wonder how they have so many more followers than I do when they have been blogging for less time than I have. Then there are other girls who send me messages asking how I grew so fast. There will always be somebody doing better than me, and there will always be somebody who is not doing as well as me. The comparison game is not good for anyone.
  7. What you put into something is what you are going to get out of it. I have never worked so hard on anything in my life as I have with blogging. Yesterday, a friend who I met through blogging said, "you are always so positive! Blogging is tough and you make it look fun!" Y'all, she wasn't lying. Although blogging may appear to be all sunshine and rainbows, it is TOUGH! It requires constant work, but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I am able to be so positive because I absolutely love it! It has been such a fun year!

Blogging Tips

I need to start this section by saying I have been blogging for 1 year, so I am clearly not an expert. I don’t even feel totally qualified to write a post like this. However, blog posts on this topic have become some of my favorites to read, so I decided to share my two cents after a year in the blogging world!

  1. If you’ve been thinking about starting a blog, DO IT! There will never be a perfect moment, and there will always be work that needs to be done. You could spend a lifetime attempting to perfect everything before launching. Create your site, write some content you are proud of, and launch it!
  2. Prioritize. Creating quality content on your blog is where a good chunk of time should be spent. You own your blog. You do not own Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. These social media platforms should most definitely be used frequently, but your blog should be the place where you focus a ton of your time. (And FYI- although I have over 18 times more followers on Instagram than I do on Facebook, I get the most blog views from Facebook! Don't underestimate the power of Facebook!)
  3. Be consistent so your readers know what to expect. I publish blog posts at 6:30 am Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. My blog posts also publish to Facebook and Pinterest at this time. I post my pictures on Instagram around 8:00 pm Sunday through Thursday. I take either Friday or Saturday off each week and throw in a post on one of these days at a time based off of my Instagram analytics. Everyone likes routine and consistency!
  4. ENGAGE! What I mean by this is like and comment on other girls’ photos. This is the best tip I know to give you for growing your Instagram following, aside from posting quality content. The more you get your name out there, the more chances you have for people to come to your page and see all of your hard work.
  5. Do not buy followers. If you’re not a blogger and you’re reading this, yes- that is actually a thing. People can buy followers (and likes and comments) to make their numbers look better. It’s a really bad idea for many reasons.
  6. Always be nice! Befriend girls who you love following! I can't tell you how vital my blogging friends have been. People who are not bloggers cannot always relate to what we go through because they aren't dealing with it. So venting and sharing ideas with other bloggers is a must. Being nice should seem obvious, but there are some super competitive girls in this industry that aren't always the kindest. Which brings me to my next point...
  7. Unfollow people who do not bring you joy. I have fortunately only come across one girl that acted like my friend but was painfully competitive and ended up not being the kindest person. I’m not interested in that negativity. So I took my own advice and unfollowed her recently. There are countless other girls who bring me so much joy that I genuinely love following! This one girl did not bring me joy, so why continue following her?
  8. Be careful about participating in too many loop giveaways. I think they're ok from time to time, but they can definitely be overdone. I have been a part of one in my one year of blogging, and it was because I genuinely enjoy following the girls in the group and we all have similar styles. So if my followers like my style, then they should like the other girls’ styles too. I would never want to ask my followers to go follow accounts that I don't enjoy following myself. I am in a Facebook group for bloggers where some girls were chatting about how they wish they had never done them because the amount of people unfollowing for months and months on end just didn't make it worth it. And the followers who did stick around didn't engage. Like I mentioned earlier, it is ok to say no. Just be kind when doing it!
  9. Figure out how to put your phone and laptop down. This is something I have not mastered. Working for yourself is hard. The first thing I do every morning is share my blog post on Facebook. The last thing I do every night is comment back to people on my Instagram post. Blogging can be a never-ending job. Make sure you put down the technology to spend quality time with your loved ones.
  10. Have fun!!! Blogging is my job, and I work my tail off. However, I am so thankful for the opportunity to do what I do! It is truly something I am so passionate about and love doing!

If you made it this far, THANK YOU! I am a big fan of celebrating all things in life, and a blogiversary is definitely something I am thrilled to celebrate! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out! Thanks again for stopping by! Have a great day!

Ebie's Wedding Weekend via iPhone Photos

Ebie and Patrick's wedding photographer was amazing. I can't wait to see her photos, but I thought I'd go ahead and share some (actually A LOT of) pictures I have from my little sis's beautiful wedding weekend!

Thursday

We kicked things off Thursday with a family dinner at Florbama Yacht Club! Our adorable cousin Mary Hanlon came and joined us, and then Ebie, Mary Hanlon, and I went to Florabama for a bushwhacker after dinner.

Friday

We started Friday with brunch, manicures, and pedicures thanks to Patrick's mom and aunt! Then we went back to my parents' condo and had Master Joe's sushi and some other delicious treats for lunch before heading out for a beach day!

We went to the church for the rehearsal, and then we headed to the house where Patrick's family was staying for the rehearsal dinner. It was one of the most fun and stress-free rehearsal dinners I've ever been to! Plus, they had the most delicious food- crawfish, shrimp, sausage, jambalaya, gumbo, etc. Such a treat!

Wedding Day

We got ready at my parents' condo! My mom's friend Kim did our hair, and Courtney Matthews did our makeup (blog post on all the things I learned about makeup coming soon!). The wedding ceremony was at Our Lady of the Gulf, and the reception was at Cobalt. Ebie wanted to keep it small, and she and Patrick invited mainly family and very close friends.

It was supposed to rain all day, but we lucked out with weather! After the reception, one of my dad's friends and his wife picked Ebie and Patrick up in their boat and drove them away- a STUNNING exit!

The after party was at Florbama, and it is definitely safe to say we had an absolute blast!

My Shopbop Sale Picks

Ok y'all, I know I was supposed to be taking this week off. However, when there is a sale this big and I have stalked the website for hours, I have to sneak in one blog post! I will share some iPhone pictures from Ebie's wedding weekend next week. However, because the Shopbop Sale only lasts through Saturday, I am sharing my sale picks with you today!

Sometimes these sales require you to spend a certain amount of money to be eligible for the sale. Not this time! For Shopbop's Event of the Season, they are offering 20% off full price and sale items with code EVENT18.

This is a big deal because many of the items included never get marked down at all. If you've been eyeing some Tory Burch sandals, now is the time to grab them! Alright, now for my picks in 3 categories: Shoes, Clothes, Bags & Accessories!

Shoes

Clothes

Facetune_11-04-2018-22-53-04.JPG

I tried this dress on at Dillard's a couple of days ago. I LOVED it but refused to pay full price for it, and I'm so glad I didn't. My mom actually ordered it for me in yellow for a birthday gift (for the sale price)! The colors included in the sale are yellow and red! It runs big. I typically wear size medium, and I sized down to a small in this dress.

Bags & Accessories

Thanks so much for stopping by! I am turning the big 2-9 tomorrow and heading down to the beach for one of my best friend's bach parties! I'll be posting on Instagram daily, so click here to check out my page there. And be sure to check back here next week because I have some fun blog content and a giveaway coming up for my one year blogging anniversary!!

Ebie's Wedding Weekend!

Y'all, my little sis gets married TOMORROW! We could not be more excited for Ebie and Patrick! We kicked things off yesterday with spray tans, a celebratory dinner, and bushwhackers at the Florabama. Manicures and pedicures are on the schedule today before brunch, beach time, the rehearsal, and a shrimp and crawfish boil!

Gift Ideas for a 29 Year Old AKA My Birthday Wish List

My birthday is coming up next week, so I thought this would be a great time to share some things that this soon-to-be 29 year old thinks would make great gifts. I don't understand how I could possibly be turning 29, but it's happening. Parker has asked me 4 million times what I want, so I'm making it easy for him. And any of you that are trying to buy logical or frivolous gifts for 29(ish) year olds!

Believe it or not, I seriously struggled when trying to come up with ideas for this post. Parker said if I don't give him any ideas, he will just give me a gift card for a shopping trip at the Shops of Saddle Creek in Memphis. And I think that must have thrown off my brainstorming process because I am 100% ok with that idea! However, I enlisted the help of some of my best friends who are 28 and 29, and they suggested some fabulous ideas that I have included in the list below!

I'm going to break it down into 3 parts. In the first part, I'm sharing an outfit that would be perfect for a birthday girl. In part 2, I'm sharing 10 specific products 29 year old girls would love to receive. In part 3, I'm sharing 10 general ideas that would have to be narrowed down based on the girl receiving the gift. Also, NEVER FORGET the birthday dessert. Parker learned this lesson the hard way. There must be some sort of sweet treat- cupcake, cookie, cake, pie, something!

Part 1: The Outfit

Outfit Details: Top | White Jeans | Wedges | Clutch

Part 2: 10 Shoppable Gift Ideas

Glamour Wash Diva- the BEST smelling laundry detergent

Lisi Lerch Earrings- the most adorable statement earrings

Nude Block Heels- a comfy shoe to wear to all the weddings and showers (my mom actually got these for me, and I'll be wearing them this weekend!)

Ugg Slippers- because the pair we've had for years is getting reallllly worn out

Pajamas- my favorites are by PJ Harlow, but I had a friend say she adores her Lake Pajamas

Zella Leggings- because we need more than one pair of the most comfortable leggings :)

Anything from the Anthropologie Home Collection at Nordstrom

New Comforter- it's about time to replace the one we've had for years

Part 3: 10 General Ideas

A Nice Camera

Experiential Gifts- like tickets to a fun show, event, or concert

Side Hustle Feature

One of my best friends in elementary school created a positive online platform recently that I am so excited to share with you today! The title of my post is ambiguous because Virginia was thoughtful enough to feature me, and I am more than happy to feature her new site right back!

Virginia created Side Hustle (https://keepyosidehustle.com) to celebrate and encourage women and all of our passions that we devote our time and creative energy towards. How amazing is this? Some of the women featured on her site are photographers, jewelry designers, bloggers, artists, mamas, writers, nutrition specialists, etc. If you have a side hustle and want to be featured, click here to share your passion.

The questions she asked really made me think. A few of them include: What is your dream for your side hustle? Do you have any advice for others working on a side hustle? Have you received recognition for your work? What are the rewards and challenges of your side hustle? You can click here to see my answers.

IMG_5731.jpg

Virginia's hope is that "Side Hustle will continually be the embodiment of the foundation on which it was built: women pursuing their passions and lifting each other up in the process." I could not be more thrilled to be a part of Virginia's new site. Be sure to check it out if you want to be inspired or share your side hustle! There are several familiar faces over there that I surely enjoyed reading about!

Thanks so much for reading! Have a great day! And thanks again to Virginia for thinking to feature Art Fashion Fun on such an amazing platform!

March Favorites

I decided to change up my monthly favorites posts, and I'm pretty excited about it. I'm actually keeping the part about my favorites the same, but I'm adding a section that shares what my readers' favorites of the month have been!

When I hung out with some of my best friends last weekend, they asked me to fill them in on how some things in the blogging world work. One question they asked was how I get credit from LIKEtoKNOW.it. When people click on links in my blog posts or in the LIKEtoKNOW.it app and purchase immediately, I will get a small commission. When people click on something and purchase later on or on a different device than they originally clicked on the item from, then I do not get credit.

I say that because I wanted to let you know where the info I am sharing in this new section is coming from. Some information I can see in my analytics is how many people click on the items I link and how many people purchase the items I link. I am not able to see who is doing the clicking and purchasing, so if you have purchased anything from my links, THANK YOU! I am so grateful, and it means the world to me!

Before I started blogging, I was confused by a lot of this. Now that I am a part of the blogging world, it all makes sense, and I am an open book. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask! Now, let's get into some March Favorites!

Favorite Dress 1, Favorite Dress 2 | Favorite Top | Favorite Shoes | Favorite Accessory | Favorite Beauty Product  | Favorite Bottoms

Favorite Dress 1- It was love at first sight with this dress. I actually tried it on at a blogger event in Memphis and walked out of the store wearing it! Love the blue and white stripes, smocked neckline, sleeves, and pockets! Runs a little big- I went with the medium because I liked the length better than the small, but there is extra fabric in the bottom part.

Facetune_25-03-2018-13-57-04.jpg

Favorite Dress 2- The colors of this dress are so pretty, and I love the classic style. It's the perfect dress for any event this spring! Runs true to size- I'm wearing a medium. Other outfit details: earrings | crossbody bag

IMG_4982 2.JPG

Favorite Top- I shared this top in a picture on Instagram (paired with pink jeans), and it's fabulousness was not even done justice. I was ecstatic to find this because I know it is one of those things that I will get so much use out of. It is SO soft and a great length to wear with skinny jeans or leggings. I know it will be a closet staple for years to come! It is also currently on sale! I want to grab more colors! Other outfit details: white jeans | shoes | earrings

Facetune_27-03-2018-13-48-24.JPG

Favorite Shoes- I saw these at a store in Memphis called indigo, and they did not have my size. But they are SO cute! My mom actually ordered them for me for my birthday! The heel is not too high, so I think they will be the perfect shoe to wear to all the weddings and showers happening this spring and summer!

Favorite Accessory- I have been wearing these earrings a lot lately! They go with everything! Other outfit details: pink top (on sale!) | white jeans | crossbody bag

Facetune_27-03-2018-12-19-56.JPG

Favorite Beauty Product- I mentioned this in my makeup routine blog post. And after hearing so many bloggers rave about this concealer, I finally purchased it myself! Not only does it conceal, but it also brightens up the area under my eyes. I got it in the color Light Sand.

Favorite Bottoms- This is going to be an obvious one because I devoted an entire blog post to these adorable white jeans! I won't say too much because you can click here to get all the details. I will say you need to size down 2 sizes, and they are the most flattering white jeans I've ever owned! AND they are on sale for 40% off with code HELLO. Other outfit details: yellow top
